Teaching Students to Make Good Decisions Can Reduce Drug Abuse

Perfection On Wheels BMX Stunt Show

School districts are discovering that one of the most effective ways to reduce drug and alcohol use among middle-school students is to teach them the life skills to make good decisions.

In the past, school drug and alcohol awareness programs focused on teaching children to “Just Say No.” But medical studies that explored the effectiveness of several types of middle-school drug awareness programs, mostly involving sixth- and seventh-graders, found that the best programs encouraged students to stand up to peer pressure and provided role-playing techniques.

Programs that taught children about the physical and mental effects of drugs gave students more knowledge about drugs in general, but it didn’t stop them from trying drugs, which was the ultimate goal of the programs. Even programs that focused on building self-esteem and confidence in students didn’t prevent drug abuse in students later on.

Teaching students drug education through life skills is a way…

PTA Planning for School Events

Everything Else Moms

Sometimes, an assembly isn’t enough. School events, on the other hand, often involve interaction between students, teachers, and parents. Members of PTA boards from elementary, middle, and high schools across the country provide student support in a wide range of areas, including entertainment and educational development. A school event is often arranged around a theme, such as a fundraising effort, an educational or character development element, or a venue that explores serious topics such as bullying, drugs, or alcohol abuse.

Your school event should not only deliver the impact of the message you wish to impart, but, whenever possible, provide entertainment in order to capture and engage the audience. This is not always an easy task, but with a little thought and planning, it can be done successfully.

Tobacco is poison!

Don’t forget tobacco during Red Ribbon Week!

Anti-Tobacco School Assembly K-12

Tobacco is a poison that has become all too popular in our culture despite the health concerns that surround its use. The reality is tobacco is the cause of the most preventable deaths each year with over 443,000 people succumbing to illness and disease directly correlated to smoking. Not to mention, there are an additional 49,000 deaths of people who suffer from the impacts of second hand smoke.  Yes, even those who don’t smoke are becoming victims of this unfortunate addiction. What’s more, tobacco is the number one cause of cancer and regular tobacco exposure significantly increases the likeliness of a heart attack. People develop emphysema, undergo tracheotomies, and develop cancer in various parts of their bodies. There is no release, no calming, and no addiction that is worth this kind of life or death.  This is not an issue that impacts everybody in the same way, but it leaves…

Red Ribbon Week Ideas for School

Image

One of the best ways to combat drug use is to start by educating students about the consequences. DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena made the ultimate sacrifice trying to make a difference so children could enjoy a future without drug abuse. Red Ribbon Week is meant to carry on his legacy. Schools take this week to engage students and help turn them away from the lure of drug use through a variety of week long activities. While every school may choose a different approach, some activities are a must.

Talks From Experts

Students may not see teachers and principals as experts when it comes to drug abuse. Instead, bring in law enforcement officials who can fully answer students’ questions. Learning first hand how drugs can ruin someone’s life is key in teaching students that there are better ways to enjoy their lives.

Red Ribbon Pledges

While educating students, offer red ribbons to students who sign pledges to be drug free. Students will wear their ribbons with pride and be encouraged to continue with their pledge throughout their lives. Games and contests can be a part of the pledging and educating process to peak students’ interest and help them further understand the value of staying drug free.

Positive Reinforcement

Decorate the school with educational material. From red ribbons, posters and displays, decorating hallways, cafeterias and classrooms helps enforce the importance of the message. Students can even get involved, which will ensure they actually read the messages throughout the school. Use positive messages to show how dramatically a life is affected by drugs and how students who choose a drug free life achieve their goals and go on to live happier, healthier lives.

School Assemblies

Schools often hold assemblies during as one of their activities for Red Ribbon Week. Usually games and a speaker are involved. For a more unique approach, Perfection on Wheels offers Red Ribbon Week assembly programs full of professional BMX stunts designed to excite and educate. Hosting a unique assembly like this helps enforce the entire week’s message to focus on living your dreams instead of ruining your life with drugs.

While it may seem overly flashy, the approach is extremely effective. By first engaging students, our team is able to better teach the message of living drug free. From discussing the consequences to demonstrating the benefits of avoiding drugs, we educate with positive messages from start to finish and students never find themselves bored while learning a valuable lesson.
